As promised, BioWare has unveiled 20 minutes of gameplay from Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Showcasing what looks to be the game's opening act, it's a linear sequence that's been edited down to avoid story spoilers.
The actual art direction is a lot less cartoony than what we saw in the title's incredibly divisive reveal trailer, while the combat really is all-out action, as was rumoured. That said, you can still pause the action in order to issue commands or use specific skills.
We also get to see the return of BioWare's trademark dialogue wheel, which will help shape your custom character's identity. Your hero is fully voiced, by the way, as has been the case since Dragon Age 2.

We think The Veilguard's looking quite good, with this gameplay doing a lot to wash away the aftertaste of that aforementioned reveal trailer. It still doesn't have a specific release date, but it's aiming for the autumn / fall on PS5.

Alright, I'm not blown away but it looked decent. Definitely a step up from the reveal trailer at the very least.
Makes me wonder why EA even bothered with the trailer they showed at the Xbox showcase? They had already announced that the game would be unveiled today - all they really did with that teaser was create negative publicity and discourse.
Better than the trailer but I'm still not blown away by it. Gotta have to wait and see if they brought back all the RPG features that made Dragon Age an RPG game because I just saw the team had a boss battle after waves of enemies and absolutely 0 loot. So no loot system? crafting? etc?
Honestly, I have the same uneasy feeling I had when they showcased ME: Andromeda and we know how that ended up.
@pyrrhic_victory It's EA. They're not known for their brilliant decision making.
Step up from the reveal trailer, but still have some serious doubts.
The gameplay and the graphics looks amazing.dragon age inquisition was 2014 game of the year.i will still be playing it.the magic is so good.yeah dragon age the veilguard is gonna be good.word up son
I like the look of it so far. I just wonder how accessible it will be to newcomers who haven't played Dragon Age before.
Looked pretty good to me albeit with a bit of jank and lip-syncing issues. BUT it's a highly scripted section from the beginning of the game, I would rather have seen less of that and added some open world stuff as that was the worst part of DA:I.
This looks promising. I would have preferred a more tactical game, maybe even turn based, but overall it was pretty captivating!
I’m just confused why anybody thought that trailer was a good idea. If I was being conspiratorial I’d say it was purposefully abysmal.
Really makes you do a double take at that trailer. Like the tone of the demo and the tone of the trailer are completely different. How did that happen?
Still it's nice to see the game looks a step in the right direction.
I was hoping for a return to the Dragon Age of old, I'm realising that will likely never happen with most of those devs now gone.
@pyrrhic_victory
Judging by Ubisoft, these companies really aim to create controversy. Apparently they think it's something good
It still seems a bit "Marvel x Fantasy" to me.
Combat looks a bit floaty and less crunchy than a soggy white loaf.
It doesn't scream "2024 quality", but maybe it will be good once you play it.
Looks leagues ahead of that garish CG trailer, but I was mostly whelmed by what I saw.
The combat looked ok, have to see how the other classes play and how the skills look on a upgraded player.
The voice acting outside of Varric and Harding was a mixed bag. Solas seemed a bit off voice wise but I hope it's the same voice actor from Inquisition.
Surprised we didn't get a release date but I hope it does hit the Fall 2024 release time frame.
Looks decent, hopefully we will get to see a bit more before launch.
I'm getting major Mass Effect 3 flashbacks with the amount of auto-dialogue from the player character. Can't be that many decisions and consequences if the dialogue wheel is hardly used.
It looks better than the reveal trailer but, honestly, still not that great.
@nessisonett Is a genius bit of marketing if true.
Negativity is a big driver for engagement.
They brought in the trailer for a certain demographic so it gets their attention.
The disgust from the core audience is heavily driving theirs and you get even more eyes on the prize.
I liked both the trailer and this, but this looks epic. Man, they made us wait.
For people who have played the Dragon Age games:
I’ve never played a Dragon Age game. Is this a sequel or is it “safe” to play this game like a standalone? If it’s a sequel, where would I start?
@CWill97 ...play them all. Origins, DA 2 - Which, btw, has some of the best writing in any videogame. It has its issues but still a great RPG, then treat yourself to Inquisition- one of the best western RPGs. You'll be familiar with the characters and lore for Veilguard then. Enjoy !
I didn't know that you can't play as your companions in this game. I am a fan of being able to switch to your teammates during battle(like you could in the first 3 games). So I wonder what people will think of that.
People must stop freaking out about CGI trailers, and wait to see the game itself.
Action looks slow and undercooked. They should have showed a segment from later in the game with a few more abilities unlocked. This looks repetitive because the main character has one ability unlocked and then basic attacks. All of the distinct enemies have the same reactions when they are attacked. So if you hit two of the same types of enemies at once they do the same exact animation of taking a hit. That is basic level development, breaks immersion, and just looks stupid. I'll keep my eye on it but they needed to come out swinging and this sort of lackluster showcase is going to hurt them.
I’m not sure I can forget about it. This looks too beautiful. Now I’m beginning to see what I missed out on during the Xbox stream.

Much better than the reveal trailer. Looks like more Dragon Age. Not day one for me, but leaning sale buy.
I disagree. I think it looked as generic as the first trailer. Nothing about this was exciting.
I can't shake off the feeling that i already played something like this and got bored of it.
I cannot imagine the development hell this game went through. Something like this shouldn't have taken so many years.
Also, heck, do characters look worse than in inquisition? They look plastic like. I am sure i have seen better models of Varric.
Also dunno the fixation on just bringing in a new hero everytime, especially when the story is a continuation of the previous title. I guess the Inquisitor just decided to shrug Solas away.
It looks...okay? I mean the graphics and atmosphere seem phenomenal, but the gameplay itself was bland as *****. They probably should have shown a mid-game mission with more interesting skills and spells. Graphics aside this looked like a generic phone game.
@CWill97 Inquisition would be the one you want to play if veilguard is the one you want to get to.
Several characters here and the plot is carrying over from Inquisition.
The first two are more self contained.
But, i still recommend the first one cause it's awesome.
this is so gorgeous

@Nem The only issue isn’t that other two games aren’t completely self contained… If I remember correctly, the main player character, Hawke, from 2 shows up in Inquisition. Which means you’re missing out the relationship building between Hawke and Varric.
@AverageGamer Bioware hates the heros of past games. They tend to kill them off canonicly. I think the inquisitor is the only one alive.
If yours survived they will do something nasty with them. I know the warden never shows up again. There is only a letter in inquisition even though morrigan shows up.
What i recall of hawke is if they survived DA2 you get a mission wether they or another character die in inquisition. I don't quite recall it very well. Either way, it's unlikely we will see hawke again, just like the warden. They really want to kill them off. I expect the inquisitor to be next.
